Industrial growth has exacerbated VOCs pollution, impacting health and air quality.
Activated carbon adsorption, a key technology for treating industrial emissions, effectively captures these harmful compounds.
This article discusses the role of activated carbon in VOCs removal and suggests appropriate products.
Why Remove VOCs?
VOCs refers to volatile organic chemical substances at room temperature and pressure, which are widely used in chemical, paint, printing, pharmaceutical and other industries. These substances are highly volatile, chemically active and difficult to remove by conventional treatment processes.
Activated carbon material has highly developed pore structure, large specific surface area and other unique physical and chemical properties, which can overcome these problems. When the exhaust gas containing VOCs passes through the activated carbon bed, the lipophilic organic molecules can produce strong physical adsorption with the carbon surface, and through the diffusion mechanism into the internal pore channel of the carbon, so as to be firmly “captured”.
Common forms of activated carbon adsorption devices:
In industrial applications, there are mainly the following forms of activated carbon adsorption devices:
Fixed bed
Suitable for treating VOC exhaust with low concentration (<1000ppm) and medium air volume. The exhaust passes through the humidification section, adsorption section, and desorption section in turn, with VOCs being intercepted by activated carbon, and the purified gas is discharged up to standard. After saturation, it is regenerated through hot air or steam, achieving continuous operation.
Moving bed
Suitable for the treatment of high concentration (>1000ppm) and large air volume VOC exhaust. Activated carbon flows countercurrently through adsorption, desorption, and regeneration cycles, fully contacting with the exhaust, with high purification efficiency. However, the equipment investment is large, the process control requirements are high, and the operating costs are relatively high.
Honeycomb rotor
honeycomb activated carbon through the rotor slowly rotating, and the exhaust gas countercurrent contact, VOCs adsorption on the carbon, and then by microwave or electric heating desorption, pyrolysis gas into the RTO incineration. This process integrates adsorption, desorption and catalytic combustion, with small wind resistance and stable operation, but the cost is high.
No matter which form is adopted, choosing the right activated carbon adsorption device is the key to efficient VOC removal.
Voc Adsorption Activated Carbon
When treating VOCs, choosing the right type of activated carbon is crucial, not only affecting the treatment effect, but also the operational efficiency and cost of the entire system. Commonly used types of activated carbon in the market mainly include coal-based granular activated carbon and columnar activated carbon, both of which perform well in removing VOCs, with purification efficiencies exceeding 90% and strong selectivity for different VOCs molecules.
Coal granular activated carbon is particularly suitable for the treatment of gas-phase VOCs due to its high specific surface area and excellent adsorption properties, and its porous structure provides a large number of adsorption sites that can effectively capture various VOCs molecules.
Specifications | Coal granular actived carbon |
Mesh Size: | 4*10 mesh |
Iodine (mg/g) | 900-1050 |
Moisture (%) Maximum | 2 |
Hardness (%) Minimum | 95 |
And the unique shape of extruded activated carbon makes it suitable for large air volume and long cycle VOCs treatment systems due to its low pressure drop in fixed-bed adsorption towers.
Specifications | Extruded Activated Carbon |
Mesh Size: | 4mm |
CCL4/CTC (%) Minimum | 60 |
Moisture (%) Maximum | 5 |
